What a minefield this really is! I think many people setting up their own business find this a problematic issue, especially in early stages. Photography is not any different. I'll explain to you below my experiences and some of the recommendations I learned on the way. First though, make sure to make everything extremely clear in your wedding photography agreement in order to prevent any nasty misunderstandings down the road.
OK, so if you're starting off seeking to come up with what to charge for shooting a wedding, you obviously would like to try and extract the most from each person you are able to. However ideally, you want them to go away satisfied rather than feeling cheated and pushed in to purchasing or swindled in to buying, even worse. Not to mention, you want lots of work too. A couple of weddings annually, even at $5000 each, isn't going to settle the bills.
Especially early on in my career, and if you are in this place now, it is important too just to find work to gain expertise and build up your own portfolio and referral network. I personally started out following three different photographers around at three different weddings. This wasn't assisting work, I just asked buddies or friends of friends who were having a wedding if I could photograph their wedding day, and observe their professional photographer for the day. In exchange, they got every one of the photos I took on disk. Following that, I charged $150 for my very first paid wedding. You may do more free of charge if you feel more comfortable doing this, nonetheless do not wait for too long before charging. You should already have some skills and people should pay money for them, plus they'll take you a lot more seriously as well.
Following that first job, I worked my way up to around $800 over the course of the next few weddings, as I improved. With this experience behind me, I had produced a decent enough collection of images to create a good website, and also to make some good sample albums. From now on, I started asking for $2500 plus for the complete days coverage. The total amount went up over time as my portfolio, expertise and merchandise have got better.
Obviously you do not need to charge that amount. You can run a successful business focusing on low-cost weddings, in which you may even do more than one each day, and perhaps provide just a dvd to the client. You might also provide less costly albums at this lower price point, and possibly not supply quite as much pre and post wedding input. Whichever route you are taking, the best of luck with it.
