Rap music is an art form created by American minorities. Most Americans do not take into account rap music to be a legitimate art form and they assume it can be basically fashionable for the moment and will experience dwindling reputation. Nonetheless, this article will prove to you that rap music is much more than just a passing trend. It has been a portion of American culture for a lot more than two decades.

All sources seem to point towards the Bronx in New York City as the origin for the 'Hip Hop' culture. The first significant component of this subculture I wish to explore will be the graffiti aspect. Prior to discussing this aspect students have to know what conditions or events existed within the Bronx which fostered the development of the 'Hip Hop' culture.
There were three key events which took location in the Bronx which led to the birth of this subculture. First, in 1959 Parks Commissioner Rober Moses began developing an expressway through the heart of the Bronx. As a result, the middle class Italian, German, Irish, and Jewish neighborhoods disappeared overnight. In addition, companies and factories relocated and left this borough. (I intend on having a map of New York City available to show my students where the Bronx is located at this point in my unit.
Inside the late 1960's, once again the nearby government made a choice that would significantly impact on the Bronx. They built an apartment block complex consisting of thousands of apartments. These had been built near towards the highway. This was the second significant incident which once again forced the migration of the middle class.
Since the middle class so quickly began leaving the neighbourhood, a problem began of too many empty apartments for landlords. These landlords were then forced to sell their properties to lesser high quality landlords. A direct result of this mass sale of property will be the empty and poorly managed buildings.
The Bronx in this deteriorating condition fell prey towards the third key event which led to the direct development of the graffiti aspect of the 'Hip Hop' culture. This event occurred in 1968 and coincided with Robert Moses' second major project inside the Bronx, the Co-Op City. It needs to be noted that these last two events had been not related.
This third event involved a group of seven teenage boys who began terrorizing the vicinity around the Bronxdale Project on Bruckner Boulevard within the southeast Bronx. This might not appear critical, but this group of teenagers laid the groundwork for a surge of street gang activity that would overwhelm the Bronx for the next six years.
